Thomas Carlyle was born in Scotland in 1795. He was a very outstanding scholar and philosopher in Britain. He wrote a very elucidative book on “Revolution of France” in 1873. He wrote the letters, sermons and biography of Cromwell in Britain who believed in the Economical Revolution. In 1865, he was selected as an Honorary Director of Anambra University. He died in 1881.

He wrote an essay on “The Hero as Prophet Mohammed and Islam”. He writes in that essay that at a time when the ignorance, indecency, idol-worshipping, irreligiousness were prevalent in the Northern world viz. Sweden’s, Denmark and Norway; consequently mankind was living life aimlessly and in an uncontrolled way, at the same time a light of religion emerged in the Arab countries which means, according to me, the sending of the Messenger of Muslims. Let it be kindly known that it was not an ordinary event. In fact, it was an inception of a new era which rendered an unprecedented revolution in the conditions and thoughts of mankind at large.

The personality to trigger such an unprecedented revolution was none other than Hazrat Muhammad who appeared in the form of a religious hero. He had never claimed to be the Lord nor did his followers ever grant him the status of Lordship.

I have chosen the title of my essay as a Great Personality Muhammad born on the land of Arab not because that he is considered to be best Messenger but because we can express our views very blatantly on him though we are Non-Muslims. Besides, there isn’t any potential risk for anyone from us entering into the fold of Islam as a consequence of accepting his excellent attributes. Therefore, I desire to describe all those good qualities of him which can be presented keeping in mind the conditions of facts and justice. I do believe him to be a true Prophet with full passion. We must ponder over him neutrally without any prejudice in order to know about the secret of his success and honour.

What were the teachings of Hazrat Muhammad and what conceptions did he present about this world? We can judge his teachings justly only when we consider him to be a true man.

But very unfortunately we have got a school of thoughts hardwired in our mind that the Islam was sorcery and the Prophet was its sorcerer. So, we have to get rid of such a pattern of school of thoughts and futile convictions about it. Whatever falsehood and fallacies we have disseminated regarding the personality of Muhammad is a cause of the third degree shamelessness for us. One of the illustrations for it is that when a learned man of Bible being a prominent Orientalist namely Edward Deepocok asked the other Orientalist namely Grotius as to what evidence did he have pertaining to a pigeon domesticated by Muhammad which picked up and ate the beans of near his ears and that pigeon was known as an Angel. Grotius replied that we have no evidence for it. Hence, now it is a ripe time that we should refrain from such futile, baseless and fallacious gossips and allegations.

Eighteen thousand people have been heartily attached to this “Deen” (Islam Religion)) for the past twelve hundred years. These eighteen thousand people also are the offspring of Aadam like us. Every year the number of people believing in Muhammad outnumbers the people in the whole world who believe in the rest of the religious personalities. Hence, how can we conclude that such a huge number of people are the victims of spiritual sorcery? These crores of the devotees of the Lord bear an indomitable conviction in the truthfulness of the words articulated through his tongue. These words expressed by him have been serving as a flame of guidance to them. Hence, how can we admit that all these words and convictions were nothing but merely a spiritual magic? Therefore, at least I can never even think of such allegations and surmises as true at all.
