Scholarly Contributions

Hazrat Syed Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani (may Allah have mercy on him), after renouncing his kingdom, attained complete mastery over all the rational and transmitted Islamic sciences by the age of fourteen. Before long, his fame as a distinguished scholar spread throughout the Arab and Persian worlds. Eminent scholars and students from distant lands began travelling to him to benefit from his vast knowledge and to become his disciples. His reputation became firmly established in the great centres of learning across Persia.

Syed Ashraf Jahangir Semnani was one of the most eminent scholars of his age, an exalted saint (Wali Kamil), a sincere Sufi, and the author of numerous valuable books. His extraordinary scholarship may be judged from the fact that he occupied the royal throne for ten years, during which large numbers of scholars and intellectuals sat before him as students, seeking to quench their thirst for knowledge.

Besides administering the affairs of the state, he resolved complex religious and intellectual issues with remarkable insight. Along with being a ruler, he was an accomplished researcher, thinker, author, compiler, translator, Qur’anic exegete (Mufassir), reformer, Hadith scholar (Muhaddith), jurist (Faqih), commentator (Muhashshi), historian, poet in praise of the Prophet ﷺ (Na’at poet), one of the earliest literary figures associated with the Urdu language, and an outstanding commentator on Islamic sciences.

Allah Almighty blessed him with such an extraordinary gift of knowledge that whenever he travelled to a new country or region, he would quickly learn and speak the local language. He would preach and deliver sermons in that language and would also write books in the same language for the benefit of its people before moving on. He authored numerous works in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Syriac, and several other languages spoken in different regions.

Leading scholars of later generations observed that very few scholars in Islamic history had produced as many literary and scholarly works as Hazrat Mahboob Yazdani, Syed Ashraf Jahangir Semnani (may Allah have mercy on him).
